In my mid-20s, I was a model. While I wasn’t wildly successful (who’d have guessed?!), I learnt a lesson that transformed how I approach sales today.
The hardest part of modelling is not doing the work. It’s getting the work.
Early on, I struggled to win jobs: no shoots, no catwalks, no TV ads.
I tried being myself at auditions - too flat. Then I tried being someone else - it felt fake and foolish.
Nothing worked until a seasoned pro gave me this advice:
“Be yourself, but bigger. And bolder.”
Authenticity matters. But, to stand out, you might need to project a slightly bolder, more memorable version of yourself.
Think of it as playing a role on stage - the part? You. But with more colour, confidence and presence.
This approach worked well in modelling and later in sales. Before every call or meeting, I remind myself:
➡ Be authentic
➡ Be bold: project the best version of yourself
It’s a small adjustment that can make a huge difference.
Try it - it’s a little bit of sales magic that might just make a difference to you too.
